Drug and alcohol rehab looks different for each individual who struggles with addiction. Depending on the substance, circumstances, and severity of the addiction, a different treatment plan will be recommended. If necessary, the treatment process will start with detox and then might be followed by a number of possible options. You or your loved one could be admitted to an outpatient treatment center or a residential treatment center.
What is Outpatient Treatment
Outpatient treatment is a level of care where treatment programming happens at one location and the recovering addicts either live at their own home, a sober living house, or a halfway house. There are different levels of outpatient care depending on the needs of the individual. These levels of care are differentiated based on the hours of treatment programming required each week.
Level of Outpatient Care
Standard Outpatient Treatment may require as few as 4 hours of treatment programming per week. This level of care is an option for those who have a supportive and safe home environment. This may not be a great option for those who have tried standard outpatient treatment multiple times before and have not been successful.
Intensive Outpatient Programs or IOPs are a more intensive level of care than standard outpatient care. These programs typically require about 15-20 hrs of treatment programming and may be paired with a sober living environment for those who do now have a home environment that is supportive of recovery. An IOP is a good option for people who have not been successful with a standard outpatient program, but is designed to minimize the need for partial hospitalization and residential treatment.
Partial Hospitalization Programs or PHPs are the most intense version of outpatient care for drug and alcohol addiction rehabilitation. A PHP program will require 25-30 hrs of treatment programming per week. Individuals admitted to a PHP program may also be living in a sober living home or halfway house. PHP will typically incorporate a number of different types of programming and is a good option for those who have tried lower levels of care multiple times and relapsed.
Types of Treatment Programming Offered
In every level of care, there are different types of treatment programming and therapies that might be prescribed for recovery. If you are also struggling with depression or another mental health disorder, you need a rehab that offers dual diagnosis treatment.
